Role Description: ASE Mentor

Purpose: To provide guidance, support, and encouragement to Black trainee surgeons participating in the ASE programme, fostering their professional development and helping them navigate challenges in their surgical careers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Facilitate Monthly Group Mentoring Sessions: Lead online group mentoring sessions using action learning set techniques to foster peer-to-peer learning and address specific challenges faced by mentees.

• Attend Networking Events: Participate in ASE networking events to build relationships with mentees, foster a sense of community, and expand their professional network.

• Serve as a Role Model: Demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion, serving as a positive role model for Black trainee surgeons.

• Participate in Training: Attend mentor training sessions to enhance mentoring skills and cultural competency.

• Provide Individualised Support: Offer 1-on-1 mentoring session to a trainee at least once within the year to provide personalized career advice and address specific needs of individual mentees.

Time Commitment:

-            Approximately 2-3 hours per month for group mentoring sessions and preparation.

o   We would expect minimum commitment of 3 webinars over the course of the year

-            Attend mentor training event at start of programme

-            Attending 3 x networking events over course of the year

-            Additional time for 1-on-1 mentoring sessions (optional)

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience: Consultant surgeon, associate specialist or equivalent with at least 11 years of experience in their specialty.

  • Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion: Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in the surgical field.

  • Excellent Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build rapport, actively listen, and provide constructive feedback.

  • Mentoring or Coaching Experience: Prior experience in mentoring or coaching, or a willingness to learn and develop these skills.

  • Cultural Competency: Awareness and understanding of the unique challenges faced by Black trainee surgeons.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Shared Lived Experience: Being a Black doctor or having experience mentoring individuals from underrepresented groups.

  • Leadership Experience: Holding leadership positions within their specialty or professional organizations.

  • Passion for Mentorship: A genuine desire to support and empower the next generation of Black surgeons.
