Empowering Black Surgeons Through Mentorship Program Topics

In an effort to promote diversity and excellence in the field of surgery, a new mentoring program has been established specifically for black trainees. This initiative, known as Advancing Surgical Excellence for Black Trainees, aims to provide support, guidance, and resources to help ethnic black surgeons thrive in their careers.

-            Finding Mentors and Sponsors -Navigating the Process: Guidance on identifying and approaching potential mentors and sponsors who can provide valuable support and guidance.

-            Allyship in Surgery - Creating an Inclusive Environment: Encouraging trainees to become allies and advocates for diversity and inclusion within the surgical field.

-            Understanding and Addressing Implicit Bias & Microaggressions: Recognizing subtle forms of discrimination and developing strategies to counteract their impact.

-            Navigating Systemic Barriers: Identifying and overcoming systemic challenges that disproportionately affect Black trainees.

-            Differential Attainment: Understanding the Data & Taking Action: Examining the evidence behind differential attainment and exploring solutions to close the gap.

-            Developing Cultural Competence: Understanding and appreciating cultural differences to provide equitable patient care.
